Miscellaneous bedrock and boulder carvings

ancient chalcatzingoAustin • Published In 1987 • Pages: 159-170

By: Grove, David C..

Abstract
Grove provides an inventory describing a variety of stone carvings discovered mostly in survey at the Olmec-influenced highland site of Chalcatzingo. Very few are found in unambiguous or undisturbed context, and there are few temporally diagnostic features. Any and all therefore may date to any time from the later Early Formative through Postclassic periods. Only objects MCR-5, -6 and -7 are conjectured to pertain to the pertinent Middle Formative period Cantera phase. Most intriguing are: 1) a possible architectural model or three dimensional map of the site at that time emphasizing the flow of 'sacred water' (MCR-8); and 2) hollows and grooves typically carved in peripheral areas of the site, perhaps meant to capture and channel rainwater for ritual purposes.
