Abstract
This document describes the excavations at the site of Cuello in Belize from the 1970s to 1980. This site is of particular importance because it represents an unusually old and previously unknown ceramic sequence for the Lowland Maya covering an occupational area dating from the Early Preclassic period (Swasey Ceramic Complex) at approximately 4000 B.P. to the Late Preclassic (Cocos Ceramic Complex) around 2250 to 2300 B.P., when the region under study was essentially abandoned. This work presents a detailed analysis of the Cuello site ceramics utilizing the traditional type-variety classification system to order the ceramics chronologically. This monograph not only describes and summarizes the ceramic sequence at Cuello but relates that sequence to the wider sphere of ceramics and interaction during the Preclassic period in northern Belize (p. 101).
