Abstract
This work presents the results of fieldwork in the South Toledo District of Belize during the period of 1970-1971, with a focus on the site of Lubaanatun where most of the excavation and mapping work were carried out. A number of other sites were also recorded or reported in the region sufficient to show the rough distribution of ancient settlements in the area. Surface collections were made from some of these sites. The author's analysis of the data attempts to place Lubaantun '…in its environmental, spatial, and historical context, to depict how the ceremonial center and its settlement acted as the focus of human activity within the region defined as its realm and maintained contact with similar realms elsewhere in the Maya area' (p. 133). The appendices describe the various other sites investigated in the South Toledo District, and the ceramics, artifacts, sculpture, and animal and human remains found at Lubaantun.
