Abstract
A persisting legacy of traditional archaeology as been the lack of detailed maps that extend beyond the immediate vicinity of known archaeological sites. Using as a basis the 1960 mapping survey by Hans Gregersen (TR.11), which almost doubled the then known mapped area of Tikal, the author and his survey team have attempted in this work to map as many square kilometers of terrain beyond the nine square kilometers area covered by the 1:2000 maps presented in TR.11 as they could (p.3). This survey was conducted entirely on the ground with ground controls. The detailed maps which make up a major portion of this document are presented in survey strips representing the east, south, west, north, and northwest border areas of Tikal as well as one extending to the relatively nearby Uaxactun site. These strips are accompanied by a running commentary highlighting certain anomalies which might otherwise pass unnoticed while at the same time providing an opportunity to record significant information and observations which do not appear on the maps at all (p.10).
