Class structure in a Classic Maya city

By: Kintz, Ellen R..

Abstract
Kintz describes the social organization (class, title, job description) and residential pattern of a typical Classic Maya city based on ethnohistoric data. She then looks at the various household units in Cobá to show that platform size and their associated structures also reflect the social structure of the Classic Maya (upper, middle, and lower class). This hypothesis, however, needs further testing through excavation of these household platforms.
