Terminal events in the southeastern lowlands: a view from Quirigua

lowland maya postclassicAustin • Published In 1985 • Pages: 245-253

By: Sharer, Robert J..

Abstract
The southeast Maya lowlands were an important zone of economic and political interaction between the Maya and peoples of the northwest periphery of Central America (p. 245). Although Quirigua is generally considered as a Terminal Classic site, it is considered here from the standpoint of its transitional role from the Classic to Postclassic periods. Much of the archaeological data in this article relate to cultural change at Quirigua and its major role as a trading center during the period specified by the author (e.g., 1200 B.P.-1100 B.P.).
