The Postclassic sequence of Tancah and Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Abstract
This study '…presents the distinct and differing Postclassic chronological development of three classes of material culture at Tancah-Tulum: ceramics, architecture, and murals' (p. 31). The author notes that while the chronology of these three material classes all change at different rates during the Postclassic period, taken together, they seem to indicate that at least in the eastern coastal lowland Maya region, the Postclassic began as early as 1230 B.P. (770 A.D.). Since ceramics survive more consistently than painting or architecture at most sites, this slowly changing aspect of material culture has been used as the basis for regional chronologies not only in the lowland Maya Postclassic, but also throughout Mesoamerica, for all periods (p. 49).
