Abstract
In this essay Fry discusses culture change as a product of revitalization movements which under certain conditions involve drastic and rapid reorientation of ideology, social organization, and economic systems. The author examines some of the potential archaeololgical signals for revitalization movements during the Postclassic period and uses this concept to explain an unusual pattern of architectural modification found by the Uaymil Survey Project in south-central Quintana Roo, Mexico (p. 126). The final section of this study attempts to locate the origins of this movement in the turmoil following the Terminal Classic period in Maya history.
