Time depth or vacuum: the 11.3.0.0.0 correlation and the lowland Maya Postclassic

By: Chase, Arlen F. (Arlen Frank).

Abstract
Chase proposes the Spanish arrived on the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mayan year 11.3.0.0.0 (or 1541 A.D. of the Christian calendar) not the usually accepted 11.16.0.0.0. He points out that there were at least two different Mayan calendars in operation in northernYucatan when the Spanish arrived and that they differed by five years. Chase presents evidence that this shortened time period will comfortably fit the known prehistory of the Terminal Classic to Postclassic Maya. Chase also uses ethnohistoric data, ceramics, the Mayan Books of CHILAM BALAM, and archaeological evidence in the Central Petén and northern Belize to support his proposal.
