Abstract
White discusses the excavation procedures, the analytical methods used, and presents the results from his excavations at four rock shelters in the Eastern Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea (Batari, Aibura, Kafiavana, and Niobe). He re-examines S. and R. Bulmer's suggested phases for Highlands prehistory and points out some of the problems with it. White summarizes the general sequence of Highland prehistory based on the then available evidence pointing out the impression of sameness and continuity for stone and bone implements and presumably of the lithic and bone technology. "This continuity in the Highlands suggests…that it may be legitimate to apply some ethnographic, especially technological, information to the analysis of the achaeological materials."
