The Hawaiian tradition is the pre-European contact culture on the Hawaiian archipelago. The time frame is 800 to 200 BP (AD 1200 to AD 1800.) The extended family was the basic economic unit. Initially subsistence was largely based on horticulture supplemented by animal husbandry, fishing, and the collection of shellfish and various wild plants. Later there was increasing large-scale production of domesticates. Hawaiian society was divided into commoners and chiefs, with two levels of chiefs at the beginning of the time period and four levels at the time of European contact.
