The Initial Period societies on the coast

Chavin and the origins of Andean civilizationNew York • Published In 1995 • Pages: 56-103

By: Burger, Richard L..

Abstract
Burger discusses the Initial Period on the central coast of Peru, as well as some sites on the south coast and to the north into southern Ecuador that are content-indexed despite being outside the area of the Coastal Andean Early Formative tradition. The tradition is marked by the introduction of pottery and the shift of major centers and public monuments from the coast to inland locations near agricultural zones. This document provides broad coverage of ceramics, public architecture, visual arts, subsistence, settlement patterns, funerary practices, social organization, warfare, and political organization, highlighting differences between the north, central, and south coasts of Peru.
