Toward the development of the state on the north central coast of Peru

origins and development of the andean stateCambridge [Cambridgeshire] • Published In 1987 • Pages: 70-82

By: Daggett, Richard Earl.

Abstract
Daggett presents findings concerning the Early Horizon from his survey of the Nepeña Valley as a test of Carneiro’s circumscription theory of the origin of the state. He describes artifacts, site types and architecture—including fortified sites, land use, and settlement patterns— for three Early Horizon phases. There is evidence for internal conflict arising during the middle phase, probably over control of exchange routes to the highlands. This conflict was resolved by the late phase.
