Browman examines the archeological evidence for the rise of pastoralism in the Andes and presents the various dates. He states, '…the pattern that is being recovered from the Andes suggests that llama and alpaca pastoralism, and …guinea-pigs, developed much earlier than plant cultivation.' (page 256). As much of the evidence comes from coastal sites, only the data that pertain to the Highland Andean Archaic were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes.
