Núñez uses the ecological diversity of northern Chile to explain some of the differences seen in various Archaic archaeological sites. In doing so he summarizes the various Paleoindian and Archaic sites found in northern Chile. He also attempts, '…to reconstruct the process of production and sociocultural change. The emergence of agricultural [and] pastoral …economies was one of the acheivements of the late Archaic populations.' (page 199). Only material pertainig to the Archaic Period in the highlands was indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes.
