Abstract
For this doctoral dissertation the author excavated the site of Marcaya, a village dating to Nazca phases 3-4, providing contrast to the excavated ceremonial center of Cahuachi that peaked contemporaneously within same branch of the Nazca Basin. A surprising finding is the high percentage of fineware polychrome ceramics, present in all Marcaya households. There is no evidence for ceramic production in the village. Instead, the polychrome ceramics probably were produced at Cahuachi. There is an evaluation of household organization, status, and economic and ritual activities, including exchange, providing an understanding of Early Nazca villages. How such villages interacted with Cahuachi and how Cahuachi shaped the political economy through ritual is also discussed.
