This is a study of the economic and social organization of the Inca empire prior to 1532, before the Spanish invasion, conquest, and colonial rule had an impact on the society. The major themes discussed in this document deal with village and state economic features, the controversy over the existence of commerce, structural changes the Inca state was undergoing in the last decades of its existence, and, in the epilogue, the author's speculations about the future of the system had it survived beyond 1532.
