Abstract
This paper summarizes the discoveries at the fortified settlement of Zambujal, Portugal up to approximately 1970. The excavations at the site were directed by the authors beginning in 1964 on behalf of the German Archaeological Institute at Madrid and the Institute of Prehistory of the University of Freiburg in Breisgau. Much detailed information is presented in this work on the fortifications at this settlement. The authors suggest that Zambujal may have served as a major trading center in the region and that these fortifications may have been necessary to protect the inhabitants from raids by members of other trading centers in the area.
