The earliest Neolithic in the West Mediterranean: a new appraisal

Antiquity53 • Published In 1979 • Pages: 22-30

By: Guilaine, Jean.

Abstract
Guilaine looks at early neolithic sites in the western Mediterranean. A table lists some of the earliest sites and gives their radiocarbon dates. Guilaine considers the fifth millennium b.c. to be the "Golden Age of the impressed ware groups of the West Mediterranean." Guilaine briefly describes the ceramic sequence from Gazel cave and goes on to discuss the transition to the middle Neolithic. He points out that the early Neolithic started much earlier than previously believed and that different groups had contrasting ceramic styles from the start.
