The Ubaid represents a period of time in Mesopotamia ranging from approximately 8000-6000 BP (6000-4000 BC). The period is represented by groups of settled agriculturists living in large villages with temple complexes and social stratification. Ubaid culture expanded greatly toward the end of the period and influenced almost the entire Near East from the coasts of Syria to the Iranian plateau and the Arabian Gulf. It lasted until the beginning of the Uruk period.
