Abstract
'The Nochta site is located within the floodplain of the Mississippi River on a long sandy ridge … Archaeological investigations of the site were undertaken in 1985 to mitigate the effects of the construction and associated borrowing activities for Interstate Highway 255.' (page 3). To reveal the unstratified, buried Archaic deposits (that consisted of stone tools, debitage, and a few features) and to recover as much data as possible, a paddlewheel scraper/belly scraper was used to cut thin slices below the plow zone. All observed tools were then piece plotted. Dalton (which is not considered Early Archaic for purposes of indexing for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects), Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian materials were found at this site. The stone tools and debitage from Dalton and Early Archaic are described and many are shown in photos in this report. Due to the unstratified nature of the site and the type of excavating done, the type of Early Archaic settlement at the Nochta site is unclear.
