The Bacon Farm site and a buried site reconnaissance

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
More than 350 backhoe trenches were excavated along the Little Tennessee River to locate buried sites to generate a settlement pattern and to test 'the validity of the location model' (page 2) of where buried sites should be found on alluvial terraces. The sampling was specifically looking for Archaic sites but also sampled two Woodland sites. 'Extensive testing coupled with the waterscreening of excavated sediments were conducted at Bacon Farm.' (page 4). This document provides a detailed report on the Bacon Farm excavations, describing the excavation proceedures, the stratigraphy, the plant remains, and the artifact and feature findings. This site is similar to the Icehouse Bottom, Patrick and Rose Island sites (see Chapman in eHRAF documants nos. 2 and 9). Forty-five other buried sites are briefly described. Only the data that pertain to the Early Archaic (Upper Kirk tradition and Birfurcate tradition, not Kirk Stemmed phase), or as the document states, a generic Archaic cultural affiliation for the other buried sites, were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects.
