McLearen describes what he consideres the most typical artifacts and features of the Late Archaic and Early Woodland in Virginia. He presents what he considers 'a narrative review and extended summary [rather] than an interpretive synthesis.' (page 129). He describes the trends, lithic artifacts, including tools and ornaments, ceramics, bone and shell tools, and types of features. There are pictures of many of the lithic objects. McLearen has divided his paper into Late Archaic and Early Woodland sections. Only the data that pertain to the Early Woodland were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects.
