Esarey examines the association of Red Ochre burials with mound building and Marion ceramics. Red Ochre sites in the mid-west date from the Late Archaic into the early part of the Early Woodland time period. He does this by reviewing some Red Ochre sites in Fulton County, Illinois and contributing some new evidence from excavations done at Dickson Mounds in 1984. He shows that the Red Ochre sites in Fulton County all have some kind of Marion phase association and so are late for Red Ochre. He also shows that the burial mounds were man-made, although not imposing, and that the mounds show 'evidence of a formalized burial program involving site preparation.' (page 240).
