'Floral remains from the Statz site were studied primarily to determine which woods and herbaceous plants were utilized by the Archaic and Woodland populations who inhabited south-central Wisonsin.' (page 172). ' A total of 2,439 charcoal specimens were examined from the Staz site of which …2,257 [were] from Woodland or probable Woodland contexts…' (page 176). 'The charcoal assemblage is very unusual in the overwhelming dominance of a single taxon, oak.' (page 176). And of the site inhabitants prefered white oak, which burns better than red oak.
