Spatial variation of debris at Guilá Naquitz: a descriptive approach

Abstract
Spencer and Flannery begin with an introduction to data organization and computer programming for mapping artifact distributions, utilizing data from stratigraphic zone D, which is immediately prior to the time frame of this file (Early Mesoamerican Archaic NY30). They then provide results for each living floor (stratigraphic zone), mapping and discussing the concentrations of flint debitage and food remains as diagnostic of activity areas within Guilá Naquitz Cave, including food storage, preparation, and disposal. Attention is given to the possible sexual division of labor and occupation of space, and to changes in resource use through time. The maps provide good visual references for subsequent chapters that present different statistical reconstructions (Documents 40-42). Only the maps and summaries for stratigraphic zones C and B pertain to the Early Archaic. (Procedural preliminaries are indexed for ORGANIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF RESULTS OF RESEARCH [128].)
