Abstract
This paper presents a summary of archaeological research on the Postclassic materials in and around the central Quiche area, and a reinterpretation of the Postclassic culture of the region. Given these data, the ethnohistoric account of foreign intrusion, coupled with the data from several other areas of Mesoamerica, provide an alternative version of the 'Mexicanization' process within the entire Maya area (p. 271). Much of the article deals with trade relations between the highland and lowland Mayan areas, and with other non-Mayan groups. The possible acculturative effects of the Toltecs on the highland and lowland areas are also discussed in this work.
