Ancient sanctuaries of the Aral and Caspian regions: a reconstruction of their history

By: Olkhovskiy, Valery S..
Abstract
Olkhovskiy describes some Early Nomad sanctuaries with anthropomorphic statues found on the Ustyurt Plateau. Olkhovskiy believes these are probably associated with an ancestor-hero cult that arose in response to the conquests of Alexander of Macedonia (Alexander the Great). Just which nomads (Sarmatians, Massagetae, or Dakhi) erected the statues and sanctuaries is unknown at this time.
