Abstract
Otchir-Goriaeva examined archeological collections from sites in the lower Volga and the southern Urals. The artifacts differ enough that sites in these two areas are not from the same culture. These two regions were also influenced by different regions: the lower Volga had more contact with their Scythian neighbors and the southern Urals had more contact with Saka and other eastern groups. This leads Otchir-Goriaeva to conclude that Sauromatian culture did not evolve into Sarmatian culture.
