Search Results

Caution

This page covers the display and navigation of paragraph search results in eHRAF. This is not to be confused with searching the list of traditions, subjects, or documents in eHRAF on their respective Browse pages.

Once you have performed either an Advanced Search or a Basic Search, you will arrive on a paragraph results page. At the top of the page after Results For, you will find the search you performed, with the number of results by paragraph, document, and traditions listed below. It also indicates how long the search took.

How to Browse Search Results

The paragraph search results page includes many different ways to view, filter, and organize the search result, aiding in locating the specific results you are looking for.

By default, searches display 25 results per page. To change this number, you will first need to click the arrow_back back button on the top left to hide the search bar. Note that this will not clear the search result. Next, click the settings Adjust Application Settings button on the top right. Then click Search Options. You can then select the number of results you want per page, from as low as 10 to as high as 150.

Filters

Click the Show Filters button to open the filters sidebar on the left. There are seven filter types you can select from:

  • Subsistence Types: the subsistence strategy of the tradition represented in the document

  • Regions: the area the document pertains to

  • Published Date: the decade the document was originally published

  • Tradition Level Samples: the sample that the tradition can be found in

  • Document Level Samples: the sample that the document can be found in

  • Document Types: the format of the document. Possible values are book, article, essay, and book chapter.

  • Series: documents that are part of a series

Each filter has a number next to it showing how many paragraphs will appear with that filter. This number will change if you have performed a search or have already selected other filters. Note that every world region has more specific subregions within that region you can also select from.

View As

There are three possible ways to view the results: hierarchy view, list view, or card view. List view is the default. The View As button allows you to switch between these views. List view and Card view display each paragraph result individually, with the document name, OWC tradition name, region, and subsistence type displayed along with a preview of the paragraph text. If you searched for keywords, they will be highlighted in the preview of the paragraph text. Click on the result to expand the preview to view the entire paragraph or “card”. Remember that this search returns individual paragraphs, meaning that paragraphs from within the same document may appear in a single set of search results.

Switching to Hierarchy view organizes results differently from the other two views. Longtime users of eHRAF will recognize the hierarchy view as our classic results layout. Results are displayed by region first, with the number of paragraphs, documents, and traditions in the results displayed next to each region. Click on a region to drill down to subregions. This will open a table where each row contains an OWC tradition and lists the number of documents and paragraph results for each tradition. Click on the tradition name to then open a list of documents that have results for that culture. This view will show each document only once. Click on a document name to show the lowest level of the hierarchy: each paragraph result for that document.

While exploring eHRAF, feel free to toggle between the different view formats depending on your research needs.

Sort

When in list or card view, you may sort the paragraph results alphabetically by region, alphabetically by author name, alphabetically by title, by publication date, and by relevance to the search query. Relevance is the default. You can also select whether to sort Ascending or Descending.

Sorting functions differently for hierarchy view. It is disabled for the list of regions. When viewing the list of documents for a specific tradition, you can sort the documents alphabetically by author name, alphabetically by title, alphabetically by tradition, and by relevance to the search query. Relevance is the default. You can also select whether to sort Ascending or Descending. Once you have selected a document in hierarchy view, it is not possible to sort the paragraphs, because the paragraphs are listed in the page order that they appear in the document.

Paragraph Overview

Clicking on a paragraph result will expand a paragraph overview box that looks the same for each view.

At the top of the box is the OWC tradition name, with the region and subsistence strategy in smaller text. Beneath the tradition name are several details about the document the paragraph appears in, including the original publication date, document title, author, and the page the paragraph appears on. Below that is the text of the paragraph, with any keywords highlighted in yellow. On the right in the overview is the OWC tradition described by the document and the OCM subjects applied to the paragraph. Click on Full Context at the bottom of the overview box to view the paragraph in its original page context.

You can also click the expand all button on the top left of the results to expand the overview box for every paragraph on the search result page. You can then click the button again to close all results if any or all of them are expanded.

Saving and Exporting Search Results

You can export the results of a search by clicking the get_app Export button on top of the results list. It is possible to export in the following formats: CSV, formatted citations for various citation styles (Chicago, APA, MLA, Harvard), RefMan (RIS), EndNote, and BibTeX. Please note that these exports do not include the text of each paragraph, but rather store the URL to the paragraph in eHRAF, along with the citation information, so that you can return to the search result.

If you do not wish to export all of the results, you can select paragraph results individually by clicking on the OWC name or code on the left of the result. This will display the result list as a checkbox list, where you can check and uncheck the results you wish to export. If no paragraphs are currently selected, you can click the check_box_outline_blank select button to select all results on the current page. Click the check_box select button again to deselect all results on the page. If you have individually selected some results, you can also click the indeterminate_check_box select button to deselect all results.

In addition to exporting to downloadable files, you can also save the results to a Notebook by clicking the playlist_add Add to Notebook icon after selecting some or all results. For more about Notebooks, see Creating and Viewing Notebooks

Search Insights

Search Insights are additional tools to explore patterns in the search results data you obtained from your search. You can also use search insights as another method for filtering and exploring your search results. You can find Search Insights on the top right of the search results page, with three available tools: Result Table, Cloud Overview and Map.

Result Table

Result Table functions very similarly to hierarchy view. It initially displays regions with the number of subregions, traditions, documents and paragraphs per region. Click on a region to view subregions and the number of traditions, documents, and paragraphs per subregion. Notice too that this will update the results below the table to only show results from the region you clicked. The results will continue to update as you go deeper. You can then click a subregion to view a list of each tradition in that subregion that has results, which will then show the number of documents and paragraphs per tradition. The lowest level displays when you click on an individual tradition, which then shows a list of each document, including information about the document and the number of paragraphs per document. Note that it is not possible to view all of the paragraphs for just one document using the Result Table. This can only be done in the hierarchy view.

Cloud Overview

Cloud Overview displays a Word Cloud of different topics that appear in the search result. By default, it displays OCM Subjects, but you can also select Traditions, Subsistence Types, and Regions. Topics that appear more often in the result have darker and larger text, with the number of results also displaying in parentheses after the topic name. By default, topics in the Word Cloud are organized randomly like a traditional word cloud, but you can click Descending Order to organize the words by frequency. Clicking on a subject, tradition, subsistence type, or region will also filter the results and cloud to only show results that have that topic applied. Applying filters below or using other search insights tools will also update the Word Cloud.

Map

The Map has points on it corresponding to specific OWC traditions and where they are located in the world. Clicking on a point will not update the results, it will merely display the name of the tradition at that position, the number of results for that tradition, and the latitude and longitude of that point. You can filter results by zooming into part of the map and clicking the Search This Area button on the map. This will only show results for traditions in the visible area of the map. Click the Reset Map button to remove this filter.
