The Eastern Middle Archaic tradition is found in the Eastern Woodlands of North America between 8000 and 6000 BP. It follows the Early Eastern Archaic tradition and precedes the Late Eastern Archaic tradition. Settlements of 30 to 50 individuals, subdivided into several households, moved seasonally to exploit varying wild plant and animal resources.  They used flaked stone tools and an increasing variety of ground and polished stone artifacts. Sub-regional traditions in interior lowlands and peninsular Florida subsisted along major rivers. Shellfish exploitation developed late in the period.
